Litania

In 1990, while I was a promotional pole vaulter for the then Harry Gill Company, I got hired as the Controller. The company was struggling, but I figured it was a good transition from competitive life to a real world job. By Christmas of 1992 the Company was on the verge of bankruptcy. In fact, the bank told us that, if we did not find a buyer, they were “calling” our note the next day.

Vince Atkins, a local real estate investor, stepped in and signed his name, backing the company’s large, long-term debt. I expected to be fired because I knew Vince would clean house as the new owner. But to my surprise he made me the president and CEO.

I was merely 29 years old with no idea how to turn around an ailing company. Vince said if I could within in ten years, he would sell it to me. This seemed ridiculous at the time. I remember thinking “who would want to buy the Titanic”? It was then that Litania was born in my heart. I cried out to God in prayer and desperation, and He answered me. Not only did he save the company, but He blessed it wildly.

In those ten years we tripled its sales volume, and consistently hit net operating income of 10% of sales. I remember entertaining thoughts of moving to a larger company around then, but Vince upheld his wish to sell me the company. And did in July of 2002, even though I had no down payment.

The next year Vince built us a new factory in Champaign, IL. We left our 85 year home in Urbana for our exciting, new factory.

In 2006, Porter Athletic was for sale. It also had been declining for a few years and needed a suitor to purchase and turn it around. Gill acquired the assets of Porter and signed a four year lease of its Chicago factory. Then in 2008, we expanded the Gill factory to accommodate moving Porter to Champaign, and when Porter had joined us in 2009, Litania had become one of the larger manufacturing locations in the state.

Since becoming CEO of Gill in 1992 I have had a “list of prayers” on my wall. Litania is not just a name, it is why we are here. Without God’s intervention at Gill and again at Porter, neither of these companies would be providing a livelihood for so many families for over 150 years. He has faithfully answered my list of prayers…….Litania.
